Halal Certification Consulting
- Duration
- Setup + audit 3-5 months
Halal certificate — an internationally recognised certificate declaring product/service conformity with Islamic rules. In Türkiye, issued by Halal Accreditation Authority (HAK) accredited bodies. A de facto market access requirement for the 1.9 billion Muslim consumer market (especially the Gulf, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Maghreb).
Asil's role: scope analysis, documentation, accompaniment for HAK-accredited body audit.
§1 Which sectors need it?
- Food producers — especially meat + dairy + pulses + frozen + processed
- Cosmetics + cleaning — alcohol content, animal-source ingredients, ethical production
- Pharma + dietary supplements — gelatin (halal/non-halal), alcohol-based solvents
- Tourism + hospitality — halal hotel certificate (beverages, food, bathing standards)
- Logistics + packaging — non-contaminated transport of halal products
- Restaurants + catering — Muslim customer segment trust
§2 OIC/SMIIC standards
Halal certification runs on a single standard: OIC/SMIIC (Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries):
- OIC/SMIIC 1: Halal Food General Guidelines
- OIC/SMIIC 2: Requirements for accreditation bodies
- OIC/SMIIC 17: Halal tourism
- OIC/SMIIC 24: Halal cosmetics
Türkiye is a founding member of OIC/SMIIC; HAK accredits Turkish certification bodies against these standards.
§3 Process
| Step | Duration |
|---|---|
| Current state analysis (raw materials, production, storage, packaging) | 2-3 weeks |
| Raw material + supplier certificate verification | 3-4 weeks |
| Production line adjustments (contamination prevention) | 4-6 weeks |
| Documentation (halal manual + procedures) | 3-4 weeks |
| Staff training | 1-2 weeks |
| Internal audit + pre-assessment | 2 weeks |
| HAK-accredited body audit | 2-4 weeks |
| Certificate issuance | 4-6 weeks |
Total: 3-5 months.
§4 HAK-accredited bodies (Türkiye)
Main certification bodies accredited by Halal Accreditation Authority (HAK):
- TSE (Turkish Standards Institution)
- GİMDES (Food and Necessities Inspection Association)
- HelalTr
- HKB (Halal Conference Bureau Certification)
Asil selects the right body based on your target export market.
§5 Combined with ISO 22000
For food firms, Halal + ISO 22000 is a natural pairing — shared documentation (raw material control, hygiene, traceability) serves both. See our ISO 22000 page.
§6 Target markets
De facto requirements for halal-certified product export from Türkiye:
| Market | Accepted certificate |
|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait | HAK-accredited Turkish + GCC-accredited |
| Malaysia | JAKIM-accredited (Malaysian state body) |
| Indonesia | MUI-accredited |
| Iran | Iran Halal Center |
| European Muslim market | HAK-accredited + some prefer GIMDES |
Asil identifies the accepted certifier for your target market.
§7 Counterfeit halal label warning
Products with only the word "halal" but no official certification don't build Muslim consumer trust. Products should display HAK-accredited body logo + certificate number; consumers should be able to verify the certificate.
