Which Turkish State Incentives Apply When You Hold an EU Trademark?

If you hold an EU trademark via the Madrid Protocol or EUTM: trade-fair stand cost, brochure printing, advertising in Berlin, even certain tax exemptions are covered by state support.

From your Berlin trade-fair stand to printed catalogues, from German digital advertising to local sponsorships — when your trademark is registered in the EU, the door opens to many Turkish state-support mechanisms. This article summarises in concrete terms how much support an EU registration via the Madrid Protocol or EUTM can bring.

Overseas Trademark Registration Support

Run by the Ministry of Trade through annual communiqués:

  • Who can apply? SMEs and joint-stock companies with exporter status
  • Cap: Up to USD 50,000 per trademark (within annual limits)
  • Scope: Overseas registration fees + attorney fees + consulting expenses

Important: Reimbursement is paid for a registered trademark. A filing alone is not enough — the application is accepted only after registration is complete.

Overseas Fair Participation Support

For Turkish firms' participation in foreign trade fairs, the stand square-metre cost, transportation, accommodation and brochure/catalogue printing are covered.

A registered trademark is required in many categories. Attending a fair with an unregistered mark carries two risks:

  1. The support application is rejected
  2. Risk of preliminary injunctions at customs

Overseas Trademark Promotion Support

Reimbursement for advertising, digital marketing, sponsorships, brochures and catalogues in EU markets. Again, a registered trademark is required in most categories.

A typical EU-market campaign:

  • Berlin fair stand cost: EUR 30,000
  • German-language digital advertising: EUR 15,000
  • Catalogue printing + distribution: EUR 8,000
  • Local media outreach: EUR 12,000

Total ~EUR 65,000. With a registered mark, a certain percentage can be reimbursed.

Design Support

Product-design work targeting foreign markets, prototype builds and design-studio services are covered under the Ministry of Trade's Design Support programme.

Collateral for bank credit

A registered trademark can be used as collateral for bank loans. Especially in export financing, when combined with customs documentation, trademark value strengthens creditworthiness.

Licensing and passive income

If you license your EU-registered trademark to a distributor, a monthly royalty income stream is created. Tax treatment is advantageous (licensing income enjoys certain exemptions).

Anonymised case

A food producer in Kayseri obtained Madrid Protocol registrations in 12 EU member states in 2018. Between 2019 and 2024 the firm received ~USD 30,000 in reimbursement under Overseas Trademark Registration Support. At the 2022 Berlin Anuga fair, 50% of the stand cost was met by Overseas Fair Participation Support. Today: regular exports to the EU, a Berlin distributor licence agreement, and a registered trademark serving as collateral in banking facilities.
